In the November/December 2009 issue of Bird Watcher's Digest, we profiled the rediscovery of India's forest owlet (Athene blewitti). After the last known specimen was collected in 1884, subsequent attempts to find the owlet had all gone unsuccessful. A surprise twist, however, brought researcher Pamela Rasmussen and her team on the verge of finding a bird not documented in more than a century. They came armed with a video camera to prove their sighting.
"I dropped my water bottle. The videotape was jittery due to the excitement, but I knew the tape would prove beyond a doubt that it was the owlet."
