In late July 2009 I spent several days at the Asa Wright Nature Centre in Trinidad in the West Indies. Asa Wright is a famous birding destination because of its wonderful verandah which overlooks several hundred acres of lush tropical rainforest.
Around the edges of the verandah are a variety of bird feeding stations offering fruit, sugar water, bread, and other foods to birds. A huge variety of birds come to the Asa feeders, including numerous hummingbirds. One afternoon during our stay at Asa Wright a powerful rain began falling. I was surprised to see a male white-necked jacobin (hummingbird) bathing in the pouring rain. He bathed and preened for several minutes, seeming to enjoy the opportunity to get his plumage really clean. This is a short video I took of the male jacobin rain bathing.
